March 1, 2026 – Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office officials report that they acknowledge Friday’s decision by the California 6th Appellate District Court overturning the conviction of Antolin Garcia-Torres in the 2012 murder of Sierra LaMar.
Fourteen years ago, Sheriff’s Office detectives led an extensive investigation into the 15-year-old's disappearance, an event that deeply affected residents across Santa Clara County
Investigators gathered critical evidence, followed all available leads, and worked closely with partner agencies to seek justice for Sierra and her family. That work resulted in an arrest and first-degree murder conviction through the criminal court process.
Our detectives have continued to diligently pursue new information and remain unwavering in their commitment to this investigation. They will not rest until Sierra is found and closure can be brought to her family.
While the Sheriff’s Office is disappointed in the court’s decision, we respect the judicial review process, and the role appellate courts play in ensuring fairness and due process. This ruling does not diminish the gravity of this case or the dedication that went into the original investigation.
We have full confidence in the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office as it evaluates next steps. Our agency stands prepared to support prosecutors in any further proceedings.
Our thoughts remain with Sierra’s family, who have endured more than a decade of heartbreak and uncertainty. They remain at the center of this case and at the forefront of our commitment to justice.
The Sheriff’s Office will continue to assist as the legal process moves forward and remains committed to ensuring a just outcome.
