AI-Generated Scams: Don't Believe Everything You See or Hear
November 5, 2026 – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials report that scammers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to imitate voices, create realistic videos, and send convincing messages that appear to come from people you know or trust.
Imagine receiving a phone call from someone who sounds exactly like a family member asking for money because of an emergency. The voice may sound familiar, but the person on the other end may be a scammer.

If you receive an unexpected or suspicious request, take a moment to verify it. Hang up and contact the person directly using a number you know. Never send money or share personal information simply because someone sounds or looks familiar.
Technology is changing, and so are the tactics scammers use. A few extra moments to verify could prevent you from becoming a victim.
