SST LTRSeptember 18, 2018 - Who is your choice to represent US in Congress?

The coming Mariposa debate on September 23rd should help you decide whom to vote for, but here is some food for thought:  Tom McClintock has represented this area for ten years and has almost nothing to show for it.  He named a couple of post offices, a mountain, and would also like to euthanize wild horses.  Meanwhile, he has voted twice to shut down Yosemite and is the main reason we do not have a park visitor center in Mariposa.  Tom’s political jobs began more than thirty years ago, and he has been a professional office seeker ever since.  He was born in New York, spent the majority of his career in Southern California, and after ten years representing our district, he still doesn’t live here.  That should tell you a lot.

Tom is an ideologue, and if there’s anything he hates, it’s government.  But he keeps cashing his government checks and making use of our government healthcare. It’s a joke he’s played on us.  He makes a ritual of attacking public lands and public land management and then doing his utmost to cut the budgets for those agencies.  His actions hurt his constituents. Health care roll backs threaten our hospitals and those with pre-existing conditions.  His huge tax breaks for the wealthy, and willingness to countenance a $1.7trillion addition to the deficit, contradict his deficit hawk claims.  Worse, however, is what he will do to us to pay for this giveaway.  He WILL cut billions from Social Security and Medicare which affect 166,000 people in the district.  He has repeatedly sought to take Affordable Health Care Act coverage away from hundreds of thousands of your friends and neighbors in our district.  He has forced up Covered California rates.  So yes, this guy is bad news.  He’s not here for you, and he’s not here for me.  He’s here for himself and his donors.

Jessica Morse, on the other hand, isn’t just a fresh face. After over a decade serving our country at USAID, the State Department, and Defense Department, including a year on the ground in Iraq, Jessica has come home to fight for us.

She comes from a family of ranchers and teachers with deep roots in the district.  She shows up where McClintock does not.  She listens to our issues which McClintock has made worse: fire prevention, fire insurance coverage, housing shortage, high speed internet, health care access, local business opportunity, and job creation.  Jessica is a moderate not an extremist.  Jessica is hands on.  She’s a problem solver.  She’s a fighter.  In other words, a public servant.

Food for thought.
