SST letterJanuary 9, 2019 - Let me get this straight. President Trump promised the nation that he was going to build a "big, beautiful wall" and that Mexico was going to pay for it. Two Mexican presidents have been emphatic that "no, Mexico isn't going to pay for a wall". So, rather than shutting down the Mexican government, Trump shuts down our government. So much winning!  Please remember that recent Oval Office meeting with Rep. Pelosi (D- CA) and Sen. Shumer (D - NY) where President Trump said that he "was proud to shut down the government". Yes, he actually said that. It's on audio record, print and video. This event happened before the new Congress was seated and after Republicans, the party in power of every branch of government for the last two years, had already approved a government spending bill. The amount of winning is over-whelming.

Yes, this current shutdown began before Christmas while the Republican Party ran every level of government.  Even the dimmest bulb would find a way of asking 'why didn't Trump get the wall funded and built while his own party was in power?' Good question. The answer is that even the GOP sees through Trump's made up reasons for the wall and are not all on-board. Trump's wall would require the government to invoke eminent domain so that private land in Texas would be taken from the owners against their will. So much winning!  Plus, the votes in Congress were not, and still are not there to fund the 'wall'. High tech border security equipment, yes, but no wall. Before the shutdown, Trump publicly announced that he would sign the Republican written bill to continue funding the government and provide billions for border security - but without the wall. Then came the cries and accusations by far-right-wing personalities such as Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter that Trump was giving in and being weak. This caused Trump to flip and not sign the bill. More winning for 800,000 federal employees, those expecting tax refunds, our national parks, the cities that host national park visitors and the rest of the public. Please Mr. Trump, that's too much winning!

Other factions of our economy that are also "so tired of winning" are our soybean farmers who have now had to accept two bailouts in the amounts of 12 billion each time. And closer to home, friends of mine manage a light bulb manufacturer in Los Angeles that buys tungsten steel from China. Their cost of that quality tungsten from China has risen so much due to Trump's tariff war with China that his company is having a difficult time competing with similar companies in the world-wide market. He may have to lay off some of his approximate two hundred employees. So much winning Mr. Trump!

Lastly, let's not forget the basic facts folks. Only six people on U.S. terror watch list have been caught coming across the Mexican border by foot. Forty-one have come over by foot from our border with Canada. By a huge margin, drugs and those on the terrorist watch list come into the U.S. smuggled through legal points of entry. Also, according to Trump's own administration, the U.S. is at a net loss of illegal immigrants. That is, more are leaving than coming in. And by the way, we could not build a wall high enough to prevent the catapulting or other mechanical means of getting cocaine or heroin over any wall.  It's beginning to appear that Trump's tantrums are all about forcing U.S. taxpayers pay for a monument to himself, that's it. All this winning is killing us.
