SST letterApril 27, 2019 - Dear Editor: With Spring finally here after a lengthy cold winter, it is appropriate to remind our elected representatives that improvements need to be done to our towns in order to attract the much needed tourism to our borders.

The very first attribute any and all tour operators look for in deciding the content of their promotional ventures is the condition of the towns to visit.  A well-maintained, clean, carefully landscaped, scene must meet the eye immediately.

Amenities such as parking facilities, storefronts, quality of merchandise, eating establishments, signage and lighting follow closely, followed by evidence of civic pride in both their governing establishments and historic monuments.

May I point out that the towns of Mariposa county presently offer none of the above to the eye of the tourist?

Our county maintained roads are atrociously rough and broken, attractive motels set amid overgrown lots, an historic creek filthy and covered with overgrowth, roadsides full of poisonous scrub and even our so-called tourist attractions loaded with rusted, dangerous ancient equipment that should have long ago been relegated to destruction facilities.

It is time to clean up our towns, to invest in its communities, and to bring some sense of satisfaction and pride to its citizens.

Doing so soon and now will reap huge rewards, both monetarily and aesthetically.
