December 13, 2020 – Yes, small businesses are hurting, but life is filled with tradeoffs. Go to any hospital and talk to exhausted workers. Observe the overflow and consider that it is going to get worst. Our local hospital even made it into national news about hospital overflow. It described a hospital worker on the phone struggling to find a hospital that would take a patient that needed more advanced care than John C Fremont Hospital could provide.

If we followed McClintock’s advice, the pandemic would get so bad that people would be afraid to go out to eat and restaurant workers would be afraid to come to work or couldn’t come because they caught it. Would restaurants closing from lack of customers or lack of workers be any better?

We are fortunate that in Mariposa the emergency room is usually not crowded. The few times that I went there I got immediate treatment for me or my wife. For most hospitals the wait for service is hours. A relative of mine waited four painful hours with an out-of-joint shoulder. Ironically, a doctor who used to work for a football team later described how to reset a shoulder joint in seconds. Better not get sick or injured in the coming months. It will be late next year before enough people get vaccinated to cool down the pandemic.
