SST LTRSeptember 19, 2022 - Dear Editor, As long-time property owner and small businessman in Mariposa I have had the opportunity to work with very fine people, including many dozens of ‘summer-job’ students and recent graduates of MCUSD. As we know, our Federal Government, and of course California’s Department of Education have worked to ensure our next generation is educated and rounded in the curricula set forth. Their statutes recognize that significant leeway is allowed in the administration of education. This is why the election of our trustees is a matter of great importance to me and the community at large.

Several candidates have entered the race and each has much support. And each is variously qualified, experienced, involved, and capable. This ‘race’ is significant and the results our children will inherit are identifiable and profound. I don’t think any argument can be made against wanting our children to leave being able to read attentively and understand, write and construct, and use math skills to their advantage. We have the capacity to graduate students with these life serving basics and also instill in them respect for others and inclusion of all. We are at a crossroads. The learning of the consequential “Three R’s” of education could be jeopardized in favor of favoring certain aspects of agenda – robbing from time needed to build social and mental skills needed to succeed in tomorrow’s world.

With this at top of mind I wholehearted endorse both Kelly Salonen for district 3, as well as Robert Hill for district 1. I’ve spent – literally – hours grilling each on what they are passionate about. Each understands and respects the mandates that emerge from the Department of Education, but more, each is a parent of children currently being taught by the very school district they want their skills to benefit. I don’t take lightly offering my recommendations. Each has been through my tough vetting and I suspect that of many others. I am wholly satisfied that each, and in complimentary fashion, will serve and make proud this community, the educators, and will hold to account the superintendent without fear or favor. They have my vote. I hope you will allow each to earn yours.
