November 29, 2023 - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office officials report that Tech Support Scams are on the rise.
Our High-Tech Crimes Detectives want to remind you to beware of rising internet scams! In 2022, reported fraud losses exceeded $10 billion, with seniors (65+) being the most targeted.
One common scam is the Tech Support Scam, involving fake pop-ups claiming your computer is infected. Avoid calls to numbers provided in pop-up messages as you will likely be connected to scammers who may take control of your computer, stealing sensitive data.
Remember, companies like Microsoft and Apple don't make unsolicited calls or demand personal/financial info out of the blue, and they won't ask for payment in cryptocurrency or gift cards. Legitimate computer warnings almost never include phone numbers.
Stay vigilant!
