Beware of Scams Targeting the Elderly
April 3, 2025 – Fresno Police Department officials report a rising number of scams targeting the elderly.
Our community is currently experiencing an increase in fraudulent schemes targeting our elderly residents. Scammers are posing as legal representatives or government agencies, claiming that a family member is in serious legal trouble and requires immediate financial assistance.
How the Scam Works:
- The scammer calls and falsely states that a loved one is in legal trouble and needs urgent financial help.
- Victims are instructed to provide large sums of cash, which a so-called “courier” picks up directly from their residence.
- Alternatively, scammers demand victims purchase gift cards and provide the card numbers over the phone.
What You Should Know:
- This is a scam! No legitimate government agency or legal entity will demand cash or gift cards in this manner.
- Do not provide any money or personal financial information to unknown individuals.
- Verify the claim by contacting the family member or a trusted source directly. Do not call the numbers provided by the unknown individuals.
- Contact your local law enforcement agency immediately if you suspect you are being targeted.
Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones.
Please share this information with relatives, friends, and neighbors to help prevent fraud in our community. If you or someone you know has been approached by these scammers report the incident to authorities right away.
Together, we can stop these criminals and keep our community safe.
