March 15, 2025 – Plumas County Sheriff's Office officials report that they urge everyone to stay vigilant against scams, PCSO scam signsespecially during tax season when these deceptive schemes are on the rise. Recently, a victim in northern Plumas County lost over $100,000 to a sophisticated scam. 

While it may seem tempting to believe you’ve suddenly won the Publishers Clearing House lottery—especially if you never entered—remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Verify Before You Act:

  • Always check before sending money or sharing personal information.

Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Calls: 

  • If someone claims you’ve won something you didn’t enter, take a moment to think twice.

Educate Your Loved Ones:

  • Many scams target older community members. Talk to your neighbors and family about these threats!
