Buyer Beware – Don’t Get Holiday Scammed
December 16, 2024 – Placer County Sheriff’s Office officials issue a reminder to stay safe from scammers this holiday 
season.
The holiday season is upon us and gift cards are a common way for thieves to strike. But knowledge is power and we’re here to help you stay safe.
Warning #1: Gift Cards without Barcodes
Thieves are stealing gift cards, removing the barcodes (the part that holds the value), and resealing them before putting them back on store shelves. Once you purchase the card and pay for it, they drain the value.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Only buy gift cards from behind the counter or secured areas.
- Ask the cashier to open the card at the checkout.
- Feel the packaging to ensure the card isn’t tampered with.
- If you fall victim, report it immediately.
Warning #2: Companies Asking for Payment Via Gift Card
Scammers will try to trick unsuspecting people into transferring funds online. A common one we see is a scammer saying "Oh, your computer is hacked. Go get me $5,000 in Apple gift cards, read me the numbers from the back, and we can use them to solve the hacking issue." This is VERY common and aimed at those who are not well-versed in modern technology.
What You Should Do:
- Don’t engage with the scammer.
- Report the incident to law enforcement.
