August 23, 2024 – Nevada County Sheriff’s Office officials report that (NCSO) has received several calls from concerned community members who believe they have received a fictitious call, impersonating our Sheriff’s Office or a member of our team, to scam them.
Even if the caller ID displays NCSO or our phone number, it could still be a scammer impersonating the Sheriff’s Office or a member of our team. The following video is an example of a real phone message a resident in Nevada County received. This call was from a “Sergeant Timothy Highsmith.” We DO have a Sergeant Timothy Highsmith on our team. This, however, is a scam.
Phone Scam Prevention Tips:
Law enforcement will never call and ask for money for any reason (do not give out banking info; do not buy gift cards; do not buy pre-paid debit cards)
Law enforcement will never call and make threats (i.e. NCSO impersonators are informing callers that they have an outstanding warrant or failed to appear for jury duty and will be arrested if prompt payment of fees is not received—this is a scam)
Law enforcement will never call to make threats if a specific action isn’t taken
When in doubt, hang up the phone and never give out any personal information.
Any call surrounding urgency and immediate action should be viewed suspiciously. You can always call our office directly to verify if a deputy is trying to reach you.
