June 7, 2024 – El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office officials report that they have been made aware of, and is currently investigating, an online scam 
which is targeting social media accounts. A criminal element is hacking into social media accounts with the purpose of spreading false information regarding a family tragedy in an attempt to obtain money.
Detectives have noted the solicitation for funds are in form of deposits on personal property up for sale. If a friend or family member is asking for a deposit on items posted for sale, reach out to them via nonsocial media means (no direct social media message) to confirm. If you scroll onto a social media post from a friend who is attempting to raise funds for some sort of need, please take extra steps to confirm that this is a real need so that you do not become a victim yourself.
Also, please use smart internet safety protocols and use strong passwords.
