February 2, 2026 – Placer County Sheriff’s Office officials report on recent IRS scam. 

It’s that time of year. With Tax Season upon us we want to remind you not to get tricked by calls, emails, or letters using IRS fear tactics.

Trending Scams Right Now

  • “SSN suspension/cancellation” threats: Robocalls claiming your Social Security number will be suspended/canceled, often tied to “overdue taxes.”
  • Fake tax agency letters: Mail claiming you owe “delinquent taxes” to a made-up agency like “Bureau of Tax Enforcement” and threatening liens/levies.
Remember: The IRS Will NOT
  • Leave pre-recorded urgent/threatening voicemails.
  • Demand immediate payment via gift cards, prepaid cards, crypto, or wire transfer.
  • Threaten to send police or have you arrested.
  • Demand payment without letting you question/appeal.
  • Ask for credit/debit card numbers over the phone.
  • Start contact by email to request personal/financial info (they usually contact by mail first).
Red Flags
  • “Call back now or a warrant will be issued”
  • Caller ID looks local/official (it can be spoofed)
  • Letters using IRS language but naming a nonexistent agency
  • Emails with links asking you to “verify” info

What To Do

If you get a scam call: hang up and don’t engage.

Call local law enforcement (that’s us if you live in unincorporated Placer County, Loomis, or Colfax!)
