August 31, 2024 – San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Thursday, members of the Sheriff’s Office had the privilege of presenting to the SLO Retired Active Men (RAMs) on the important topic of scams targeting seniors. We shared information on how to protect yourself and your loved ones from falling victim to these crimes, and frequently reported scams in SLO County.
Here are three essential tips to keep in mind:
- Trust Your Gut: If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Always listen to your instincts.
- Avoid Being Rushed: Scammers often pressure you to make quick decisions, like insisting you "must pay now!" Take your time and don’t let anyone push you into a hasty choice.
- Verify the Caller: Always confirm the identity of anyone reaching out to you, whether by phone, email, or in person. Use official phone numbers or visit offices in person.
