Nice Try, Scammers… Not Today!
September 8, 2025 – Placer County Sheriff’s Office officials report on a new scam.
New week, new scams - we’re here to keep you in the loop so you can spot the fakes before they spot you.
- Warrant Scam
The call comes from a blocked number. The caller says you have a warrant and need to pay up ( #1). They’ve even done a little homework and can rattle off your address. Then comes the kicker: they tell you to meet them at the Auburn Jail. (Scammer, if you’re reading this, we’d love for you to stop by the jail, you’ll fit right in.)
In one case, the scammer claimed the warrant was for missed jury duty and a fine was due. (That’s not how it works.)
We’re glad folks called us first to double-check, that’s exactly what you should do! Our real number: (530) 889-7800.
- Jail Scam
This one comes from someone claiming to be “Sgt. Owens” at South Placer Jail. In the cases we know about, the scammer called people who 𝑑𝑜 have relatives in custody, making it feel more believable. They ask for money to pay for a SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring) device.
Here’s the twist: scammers are now quoting our actual front desk number to sound legit. But it’s still a scam. We will never call you asking for money. When in doubt, hang up and call us directly at (530) 889-7800.
