October 5, 2025 – Placer County Sheriff’s Office officials report that they want to warn the business community about
a scam that has recently been reported in our area.
Suspects are contacting local businesses to purchase items (such as animal feed, stamps, or other goods) using a credit card.
- The items are then picked up, sometimes by a courier.
- Weeks later, the business receives a chargeback when the credit card company reports the transaction as fraudulent or stolen.
- This scam leaves the business without the product and without payment.
What businesses can do:
- Be cautious of large or unusual credit card purchases, especially from new customers.
- Verify the identity of the person picking up the items.
- If something feels off, trust your instincts and take extra steps before completing the transaction.
Please share this warning with other local businesses to help protect our community from these scams.
